Timgad

A remarkably complete Roman colonial city founded by the emperor Trajan around 100 AD on the edge of the Sahara in the Aurès region of Algeria. Sacked by Berber tribes in the 5th century and finally abandoned after the Arab conquests, it was swallowed by sand for around a thousand years, preserving its strict grid plan, forum, theatre and triumphal arch.
